To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of our national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Ateneo de Manila University launched in June 2011 “A Legacy of Service: Rizal for the 21st Century”, a series of historical exhibits, academic lectures, and cultural presentations.
As a fitting culmination to commemoration of Rizal’s birth sesquicentennial, the university, in cooperation with The Women of Ateneo (TWA) and university units and organizations, will produce and present “BRINDIS” (a Spanish word for “toast”), a multi-sectoral Rizal Sesquicentennial Culural Gala Night performance on December 2, 2011, Friday, 6:00 p.m., at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Ateneo de Manila University. This 2-hour program will be “featuring music, poetry, and theater, that heralds kindred images of Rizal, the hero, writer, scholar, visionary, and nation builder. Staged as a dramatic narrative, Brindis will celebrate the life, legacies, and continuing influence of the Ateneo de Manila’s premiere alumnus. As a multi-sectoral effort, Brindis gathers the university’s various artistic sectors in performance, in a symbolic tableau celebrating undiminished offerings in the contemporary intellectual and public life of the university, affirming Rizal’s vision for his people and nation.”
Brindis production is led by Mr. Danilo Francisco M. Reyes (Department of English), Dr. Jerry C. Respeto (Department of Filipino) and Mr. Richard de Guzman (Department of Filipino). The Ateneo organizations that will be performing in Brindis are the Ateneo Children’s Theater, the Ateneo Grade School Boys Choir, the Ateneo Grade School Dance Group, the Ateneo High School’s Dulaang Sibol and Teatro Baguntao, the Ateneo College Glee Club, the Company of Ateneo Dancers (CADs), Tanghalang Ateneo, Enterteynment Para sa Tao, Bayan, Lansangan, at Diyos (Entablado), Blue Repertory, and the Ateneo Staff Association (ASA). The Women of Ateneo will be participating in one of the production numbers of Brindis.
